How to Hold a Successful Garage Sale

How to Hold a Successful Garage Sale

Garage sales can be a great way to get rid of clutter and earn a little extra cash before you sell your home.  Below are some tips for a successful garage sale.

Don’t wait until the last minute.  Planning a garage sale can demand a lot of time and energy.  You don’t want to pressure yourself and hold a garage sale the week before an open house.

Get a permit.   Some cities require a special permit to hold a garage sale.  The permits are often free, but still require you to register with the city.

Advertise.  Place an ad in free classified papers, web sites, your local newspapers and Facebook.  Let the public know what types of items will be sold, such as women clothes, furniture, men’s tools, etc. and on the day of the sale use balloons and signs with prominent arrows to catch the attention of passersby.

Don’t sell junk.  Decide what’s worth selling and what’s not.  For example, if an appliance is broken or you have stains on clothes, throw it away.

Price your bargains.  Attach removable stickers to all items you plan to sell.  Remember, garage sales are supposed to be bargains, so try to be objective as you set prices.

See if neighbors want to join in.  You can turn your garage sale into a block-wide event and lure more shoppers if you team up with neighbors.

Stock up on bags and newspapers.  People appreciate a bag to carry their goods.  Newspapers are handy for wrapping fragile items.

Money.   Make a trip to the bank to get ample change for your cashbox and never leave your cashbox unattended.

After the sale, donate your remaining items or sell to a resale shop.  Now that all of your clutter is cleared out, it’s time to focus on preparing your house for a successful sale.
